Monday evening quickly turned from a hot summer night to a dark raging storm complete with high winds, lightning, and heavy rain. Lacey Sloan, the Weston County Natural Resource District Manager, told the News Letter Journal that rain totaled two and a half to three inches in places west of town, amounted to nearly an inch at the Forest Service Building and District Office, and accumulated over a half an inch up Salt Creek and Oil Creek.

Newcastle Police Chief Jim Owens said there was a downed power pole and line laying across the train tracks near the Sage Motel, which halted a train for a period of time, and there were also reports that a power line was down behind Black Hills Plumbing.
