Quorums prove elusive for city and county zoning boards

With summer quickly approaching and construction season coming into full swing, the Newcastle Planning and Zoning Board has struggled to pull together a quorum to consider zoning variations and perform other tasks that allow building projects to move forward.

The situation came to light when City Engineer Mike Moore revealed to the Newcastle City Council at their May 15 meeting that four different individuals had to be informed a week earlier that they could not have their cases heard by the Board of Adjustment— one of the functions served by the Planning and Zoning Board— when it was determined that not enough board members to constitute a quorum were going to be able to attend.
